Technical FAQ

FAQ About OPP Film & OPP Bag Materials

Key technical questions about OPP film thickness, stiffness, coefficient of friction, corona treatment, static electricity and heat-sealing performance.

Thickness does not equal complete mechanical performance. A 30 μm value only represents the average thickness, not MD/CD stretching, stiffness, elastic modulus, shrinkage rate, surface structure or raw material formula. Two films may have similar average thickness, but their lateral thickness distribution and bag-making performance can be very different.

Many times it is not poor film quality, but the coefficient of friction does not match the customer’s equipment. If COF is too high, the film may be difficult to slide and prone to wrinkling. If COF is too low, slipping, inaccurate feeding and unstable marking may occur. The key is machine suitability.

This is usually related to corona treatment decay. Polypropylene has low surface adhesion, so corona or surface treatment is needed to improve wettability. However, the treatment effect may decrease with storage time, so qualified surface tension at shipment does not always mean the same performance after one or two months.

The core issue is usually static electricity. OPP has strong insulation performance and can easily accumulate static during high-speed unwinding, friction, slitting, bag making and dry environments. For applications such as food, cosmetics, medical supplies or transparent packaging, anti-static OPP or static elimination equipment may be required.

Not all OPP or BOPP films have heat-sealing properties. Ordinary BOPP mainly provides transparency, stiffness and gloss, but it usually cannot be firmly heat sealed without a specially designed heat-seal layer. Common structures include plain BOPP, one-side heat-seal BOPP, two-side heat-seal BOPP, co-extruded BOPP and printable BOPP.
