FAQ About Desiccant Packaging Materials
Learn how to choose breathable, waterproof and heat-sealable packaging materials for different desiccant and moisture-control applications.
No. What desiccant packaging materials really need is a balance between moisture vapor transmission, powder leakage control and liquid water resistance. If the air permeability is too high, the pore size may become too large, which can easily lead to desiccant dust leakage. If the material is too dense, it may reduce the start-up speed of moisture absorption.
Not recommended. Silicone, molecular sieve and montmorillonite usually remain in a solid state after absorbing moisture, so the key requirements are moisture permeability, powder leakage prevention, strength and heat sealing. Calcium chloride gradually forms concentrated saltwater after absorbing moisture, so the material must also provide better liquid water barrier performance.
GSM only represents the mass per unit area. It does not represent functional performance. Two materials with the same GSM may have completely different fiber types, pore structures, membrane layers, composite processes and heat-sealing layers. For desiccant packaging, it is better to purchase by performance specifications rather than by GSM only.
These three indicators solve different problems. Tensile strength affects roll operation and unwinding stability. Tear resistance prevents small cracks from expanding quickly. Puncture resistance helps protect the material from sharp corners, compression and granular desiccants during filling, transportation and use.
Not necessarily. The key lies in the material structure used to achieve waterproofing. Excellent desiccant packaging materials should block liquid water while allowing water vapor transmission. With a functional composite structure, both hydrostatic pressure resistance and reasonable moisture vapor transmission can be achieved at the same time.
